Calgary RING & SING

The annual RING & SING Handbell and Choir Youth Festival will be taking place in March 2017! Bring your Elementary Choirs and/or Handbell Teams to one of three March dates. Your students will be able to perform their own selection(s), receive workshop-style adjudications from two extraordinary, and expert adjudicators (one for Choirs and one for the Handbell Teams), and participate in a massed ringing/singing where everyone sings and rings together. This event is sponsored by the Calgary Catholic School District (CSSD) and the Alberta Guild of Handbell Ringers (ALGEHR).

Mass Music:

All schools must order and prepare the chosen choir/handbell massed ringing piece: “Sing Away Sadness!”, by Neil Harmon. The number is AG23031.  It comes in a booklet, with reproducible Unison voice parts, scored for 2-1 Octaves of Handbells with an optional 2-3 octaves of Handchimes.  This music would also be great for use in the elementary classroom.  You can order it quickly through www.handbellsetc.ab.ca (403-437-9096).

Schools participating in the Ring and Sing need to use original copies of the music.

You will also have to provide a copy(ies) of “your own choice” music for the adjudicator.

Any elementary choir and/or Handbell team may register. Each group needs to arrange for busing to the host school.

Registration forms can be printed off here (2017 Ring and Sing Downloadable Registration Form).  You can also contact Anne Hergott (president@algehr.org), and she will email you the appropriate registration form(s).

Registration Fees:

The fee for the festival is $60.00 per choir, and the director must be a member of the Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers* ($30/one year $50/two years).  See https://www.algehr.org/members for further information.

Please note: The CSSD will provide all schools with a $100 busing subsidy and will pay for a one year ALGEHR membership for non-members!

Ring and Sing Festival Fee inclusions:

  • Host schools provide tables and risers, piano and/or sound system, and seats for parent or student audience.
  • Individual choir performance time.
  • Expert adjudication in a workshop style.
  • Massed ringing practice and performance experience.
  • Fruit will be provided as a snack break. Students are expected to bring water bottles and other snacks (if wanting/needing more than fruit). It is at the teachers’ discretion when and how their students will eat lunch.
  • Final massed ringing performance time.

Handbell Teams:

Each handbell team must bring their own handbells, foams, music and gloves to the festival.

Own Selection Piece(s):

Each group can perform any selection of repertoire they wish. Each group will have between 5-8 minutes to perform 1 long (or 2 shorter) selections.  Selection choices need to be confirmed by February 20, 2017.

There may be video and still photography taken during the festival, so teachers/conductors must ensure that the proper District FOIP form (available at schools) is filled out by all students participating, giving ALGEHR permission to use the photos in possible newsletters or future promotions for youth festivals and handbell activities.
